The lovely Ruth Singer has provided an exclusive tutorial for visitors to The Natural Wedding Company blog – a ‘how to’ guide to making one of her beautiful Camelia flower corsages.

Ruth will guide you through how to create your own corsages perfect for brides or bridesmaids using fabric remnants – perhaps even left over material from making your own wedding dress!  These flowers are really simple to make and work well with heavy weight satin and silk dress fabrics.

Stylish homemade “save the date” cards

Charlie

savethedates

September’s creative post is designed to help inspire you to create your own wedding stationery – or at least,  your own stylish homemade ‘save the date’ cards.  ‘Save the date’ cards seem to be relatively unknown in the UK, but they are popular in the US.

For anyone who’s not sure what a ‘save the date’ card is, you send them out to your guests with the date of your wedding and your names, and perhaps the location of where your wedding will be.

The great thing about ‘save the date’ cards is that you can send them out before you have confirmed all the details of your wedding, such as time and venue, which are needed for invitations.  Friends of ours who recently got married sent their ‘save the dates’ out in the form of a magnet, which we stuck on our fridge.

The below images were created using home photographs, and edited on a free online website called Picnik.  This website is easy-to-use and allows you to create high quality images with different effects, borders, and text.  I see ‘save the date’ cards as an opportunity to be quite fun and lighthearted, or you could tie them in with your wedding stationery if you know what it will look like.

Some design ideas and tips

The photograph of the donkeys was taken on holiday in Menorca, and I thought would make a great ‘save the date’ as the donkeys look like they are kissing.  I added a sepia affect to create the two-tone colour so that they text would stand out against it, and used a tool on Picnik to soften the edges of the photo but keep the donkeys in focus.  I used all the same font for the text, and used the ‘stickers’ option on Picnik to create the heart by the couples initials.

Pretty planted place names

Charlie

P1140031

These pretty planted place names (what a mouthful!) are really easy to make and would also double as lovely gifts for your guests.  For each guest, prepare a small flower pot that you’ve planted up, write your guests name on a plant label and stick it into the soil.  Place the flower pots in each persons place setting at their designated table.

P1140029

I came up with this idea after a recent visit to the RHS Tatton Flower Show.  Not only is it a showcase of fabulous plants and gardens, but there are hundreds of retailers selling all kinds of lovely things.  I spotted a fantastic little booth selling a huge variety of plant labels.  I am always looking out for wooden labels, and they had a great selection.  This sparked the idea for this month’s creative project, and I bought a pack of chunky wooden plant labels and a Victorian terracotta pot.

Afternoon tea in an urban meadow

Charlie

Thinking about planning a laid-back wedding with a very English afternoon tea for your guests?  Maybe you fancy a picnic, with live music, tents and bunting.  Well, last week the company that I work for (my day job) celebrated its 11th birthday (we forgot our 10th last year!) – we invited lots of friends and colleagues to join us for afternoon tea in a meadow in the centre of Manchester.

Here are some pictures of the party – hopefully a little bit of inspiration for anyone out there planning a tea party wedding.

…A bell tent, picnic rugs, bunting hung from rustic poles and shepherds crooks, tables covered in brightly coloured tablecloths, and oriental parasols…

…Make-your-own knicker bocker glories with homemade strawberry jelly, Cornish ice cream, a summer fruit salad, whipped cream and chocolate flakes…

…Homemade tiny fluffy scones, strawberry jam and whipped cream, spoons in vintage flower pots…

A homemade rustic flowerpot sign

Charlie

What better way to guide your friends and family to your wedding ceremony or reception (or to the summer cocktails!) than with a simple, homemade sign.  There are some fantastic ideas for wedding signs out there, from old planks of wood casually painted, to those painted soft vintage pastels with the text in elegant black lettering.  This is my version which is perfect for popping on a table rather than staking in the ground: perhaps you could write your wedding menu on it, or a fun message to your guests.

Colourful cupcake tower for a fun wedding

I love to cook, so I thought it was about time that I posted a creative food idea for all of you planning a more down-to-earth weddingCupcakes would be perfect if you’re thinking about creating a colourful and relaxed wedding.  Even if you’re not confident about your cupcake or fairy cake making skills, I’m sure most of us have a family member or friend who is a bit of a whizz when it comes to cake making.  Besides, everyone should have a go at making fairy cakes as they’re really simple, taste so much better when homemade, and you can decorate them any which way you choose!

By making your own fairy cakes, you can ensure that the ingredients are organic, fair trade, or local depending on your preference.  From organic flour to local eggs, fair trade sugar or farmhouse butter, you will be able to make positive choices about what goes into your wedding cakes.

Now for the recipe.  I use the following recipe, though I can’t remember where I got it from, which produces lovely fairy cakes.  However, there are loads of fairy cake or cupcake recipes out there, or you may even have a tried-and-tested family favourite.

A woodland foraged bouquet for a casual country wedding

Firstly, apologies for being late with my monthly creative post – I have been a bit wrapped up in birthdays and my garden.  However, I knew exactly what I wanted to create for the post – a beautiful woodland and hedgerow inspired bouquet that would look lovely for a casual country wedding.

Made from a simple combination of three plants that can be found in abundance in our woodlands, hedgerows and fields at this time of year, this bunch would look beautiful tied up with rafia or displayed as a table centrepiece in a vintage jug or jar.

An Easter wedding project: bird nest favours in vintage tea cups

Wedding project: bird nest favours in vintage tea cups

April’s creative project is designed around the idea of an Easter wedding.  When thinking about ideas for a simple but beautiful Easter wedding project I just knew it needed to centre around mini speckled chocolate eggs.

How to create these bird nest wedding favours

I used ordinary rabbit hay (I have lots of this lying around as I have two cheeky bunnies of my own) that I shaped into a small nest.  Then I placed the nest of hay into a pretty vintage tea cup complete with saucer.  I had a search around my backgarden and found some moss and a tiny white feather, which I placed in the nest to give it a more natural look.  Then I nestled a handful of chocolate mini eggs in the centre.

Rustic hyacinth centrepiece for a spring wedding

Rustic hyacinth centrepiece

Rustic hyacinth centrepiece

On Mother’s Day my partner’s mom and stepdad joined us for lunch.  For our table I created this simple but beautiful centrepiece using a large jar, a bunch of lilac hyacinth and some structural brown twigs.  I love this kind of rustic simplicity, and that it is something you can easily put together yourself, but looks gorgeous, and is inexpensive to create.

This would be ideal for a rustic, spring, country wedding. The combination of lilac, green and dark brown would make a stunning theme to carry subtly throughout the rest of your wedding day.

Winter meets spring wedding posies

Winter meets spring wedding posies

It’s that time of year when the first of the spring flowers start to show, but winter still has a grasp. It’s a hard time of year for seasonal wedding flowers, but we think there’s still inspiration to be found in nature that can be translated into your wedding flowers.

Beautiful but simple to create, these small posies would be ideal for bridesmaids at an early spring wedding. The combination of white, yellow and brown, with hints of green seems to epitomize the end of winter and the start of spring.

These posies are created from paperwhites, narsissi and a collection of twigs and small pine cones. They are simply tied together with natural raffia for a lovely down-to-earth and rustic feel.
