Elegant but rustic ‘tying the knot’ save the dates inspired by my handmade wedding stationery

Tying the knot save the dates

When someone adds one of my blog post links to there’s I get a message about it, so I was delighted when I got this one and discovered that someone had been inspired by my own save the dates.  Quite by surprise the save the dates we made for our wedding have become one of the most popular blog posts I’ve featured and many, many TNWC readers have recreated their own versions – I love seeing them all.

Most often people use the recycled brown card that I myself fell in love with, but these ones created by an American letterpress and stationery company use a white card and are equally beautiful.  The couple were inspired by the ‘tying the knot’ version of my save the dates (another ‘most viewed’ blog post) where a knot is tied in twine as you open the save the date.

Becoming A Natural Wedding Bride

Please note as of February 2013 I have closed applications for this feature.  However, if you are planning a wedding for 2014 and are interested in being a guest bride blogger later in the year, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me at charlie@thenaturalweddingcompany.co.uk.

I thought it was about time I opened up these pages to someone else’s wedding plans, a bride-to-be who’s creating a handmade wedding that fits with my ethos of natural, eco-friendly, seasonal, vintage and homemade.

I get so many emails from creative couples who are crafting wonderful sounding wedding days that I’d like you all to have a voice here too, and to inspire others who are just starting out on this mad wedding journey.

I don’t have a specific number of contributors that I’m looking for, it seemed a bit daft to request a certain number when it’s the first time I’ve tried it, I would just like to open up the invitation for you to get in contact if you’re interested and keen.

Natural wedding with heavenly country garden flowers

It’s with great pleasure that I get to bring you another real wedding from a couple who planned a beautiful, handmade and natural wedding.  Bride Laura used a number of TNWC businesses to help her create the wedding that her and groom Charlie dreamed of, and they were even inspired by my own handmade wedding invitations.

I know you are just going to love this wedding and I’m sure you’ll find inspiration for your own day here.  So stop what you’re doing, make yourself a cup of tea and settle down to read all about Laura and Charlie’s beautiful day (and if you like specific details you’ll find links to all the suppliers at the bottom of the post)…

Seasonal country garden wedding flowers

Laura and Charlie got married on a very rainy Saturday in July at Silchester House in Berkshire. “We wanted the wedding to be fairly informal and very relaxed.  Charlie and I are very casual so it would have felt a bit false to go for something overly traditional.  We tried to make the day feel like ‘us’ wherever possible.”

“We also avoided having a specific colour scheme as we wanted everything to be as organic and natural as possible.  I think this approach made planning the wedding a bit more work – we ended up DIYing lots of the elements when we couldn’t find any alternatives that we liked – but seeing everything come together just as we wanted made it worthwhile.”

Crochet lace jam jar hangers to create soft twinkling lanterns

Crochet lace jam jar hangers

I’m sure at some point someone will declare jam jars and their many uses at weddings “so last year” in fact, they probably already have.  At any rate, I don’t care – there is something wonderfully simple and pleasing about a jam jar filled with flowers from your garden, or flickering as a lantern in the evening with a tealight – whether it’s at your wedding or in your home.  Especially knowing that in a previous life it contained jam, honey, chutney or some other condiment.

Inspire your younger wedding guests by creating a natural flower carpet

Wedding flower carpet

I am always on the lookout for something new and original to share with you, so I was quite intrigued when I received an email from Camelia telling me about her wonderful business Sea Mandala and the flower carpets she helps you to create.

These flower carpets are a wonderful way to get your family and friends to create a unique piece of art at your wedding day, and look incredibly engaging for kids.

Children's activities at a wedding

Before Camelia got in touch I had never heard of a mandala or flower carpets, so I asked her a few questions to help understand the creative process…

So what is a flower carpet?  “A flower carpet is an art design that is created out of an exuberance of petals and other colourful natural material through the contributions of children and adults at a wedding ceremony.  It is a beautiful and aromatic space that creates a lasting impression on onlookers and participants alike and provides for wonderful unique photographs of the couple placing handfuls of petals onto the evolving design.

The design evolves through the energy of the people that pass through it and their contribution with a handful or more of the materials on display. Children love it and adults feel inspired to contribute a handful of material towards the evolving design through the duration of the wedding party.”

Spotted today in Reverie Magazine two of our wonderful businesses

Reverie Magazine eco-chic wedding

This morning I got totally wrapped up reading the new Reverie Magazine, and was particularly excited because the River Cottage wedding (that featured on the TV series) with the edible bouquet was featured.  Not only was it lovely to see photos from this wedding because it was exceptionally beautiful and captures everything I love about natural weddings, but it also featured two of the businesses featured in the directory.

The wedding jewellery was all ethical and Fair Trade, with some of it coming from April Doubleday, who features in our directory.  In addition to the wedding, there was a page called ‘Get the Look’ and this featured April Doubleday again and also The Vintage Wedding Dress Company (with my favourite Edwardian inspired wedding dress).  Do take a look at these two fabulous businesses and also have a read of Reverie Magazine to see the River Cottage wedding (page 112 if you’re wondering!).
