Sabina Motasem 2012 wedding dress collection

If you’ve got engaged over the Christmas break then one of the first things you might be thinking about is your wedding dress – I know I certainly was concerned about what it would look like and where I would find it.  One of the lovely businesses from the directory, Sabina Motasem Bride, has just launched a beautiful new collection for 2012 so I wanted to share some of these beautiful dresses with you.

Sabina Motasem Bride is a London based label creating understated and vintage inspired wedding dresses, and for the eco-conscious or ethical bride you can be sound in the knowledge that they are ethically produced in the UK and can be made from peace silks.  What’s even better is they offer a fantastic service to transform your wedding dress after your big day into a cocktail dress that you can wear again.

1910s Edwardian style cream tiered lace wedding dress

Edwardian style lace wedding dress

I think the Edwardian era must be my favourite when it comes to wedding dresses, or at least the early period of the 1900s.  This blog post is purely self-indulgent because I just love this dress and wanted to share it in all its loveliness.  I love my wedding dress but how much do I wish I could wear this one!

I am really excited to share these photos with you – they are the first official engagement photos to be shown on the blog and aren’t they beautiful!

The bride- and grooom-to-be, Ashley and Nate, wanted to create a unique ‘save the date’ announcement that they could send out to their guests.  They are planning a rustic barn wedding so wanted to create a similar rural country feel to their engagement photos.

Antique lace wedding dresses for the modern bride

Charlie

Now I appreciate that these wedding dresses are not within everyone’s budget, but I thought they were too beautiful not to share with you – if only for eye candy or inspiration.  These dresses are inspired by vintage wedding dresses and are covered in antique lace from England and France.

I love that for vintage wedding dresses, which are so often from the 1950’s, these are inspired by the 1900’s instead.  Bring on the real old school glamour I say – I think I must be a real romantic at heart.  I knew I always had a soft spot for a period drama.

These two dresses (on the left ‘Maimuna‘ on the right ‘Helen‘) are from Charlotte Casadéjus.

My top vintage wedding dresses from Etsy

Charlie

This pretty vintage dress made in the late 1970’s would make a beautiful wedding dress for someone having an understated wedding or a couple who are eloping.  If Mr Rigg and I had eloped this is what I would have worn, in my mind it inspires dreams of spending a summer living on the edge of a prairie.  It costs around £20 and is available from Coldfish Vintage.

A 1950’s floral lace wedding dress with 3/4 length sleeves and a long train – this dress is romantic and you can almost imagine it on a fairytale princess.  I would carry a bunch of blousy old-fashioned roses or a spray of wild daisies.  This dress is from deLightly Used and costs just under £200.

Our rustic country wedding – the veil, the hair and make-up, and pretty accessories

Charlie

Today it’s all about my wedding accessories – from my vintage inspired shoes to the heirloom lace veil, natural make-up to a gorgeous garters.  It’s all here including the details of how I came to choose them for our wedding.

The Shoes

Mark Tattersall Photography

I spent ages looking for the ‘right’ shoes.  So many wedding shoes are elegant but modern, and my dress was so delicate and had a country feel to it, that I wanted something with an old-fashioned feel.  I also didn’t want really high heels as most of our wedding was spent walking on grass.

In the end I came across the gorgeous designs by Diane Hassall and fell in love with a pair called ‘Liliana’ – I managed to track them down to a bridal shop in nearby Knutsford and despite being loads more than I’d ever imagined spending, they came home with me.  They came with a choice of floaty organza or velvet ties – I went for the velvet ones.

I particuarly love this picture above of my shoes on the windowsill in my parent’s bedroom, with all those personal bits you find in people’s houses in the background.

The Veils

I hadn’t planned on wearing any veil…and I ended up having two!  My mum spent ages trying to track down the family veil, which she had worn when she married my dad, and my granny before her, and so on back through the generations.

I love this photo of my little sister Izzy holding my parents wedding album open at a photo of my mum wearing the veil, with it hanging behind Izzy from the cupboard…

Our rustic country wedding – my antique lace wedding dress

Charlie

Whilst a lot of brides spend hours getting ready, I had just over two hours to cool down (I was so hot from dashing round all day getting the garden ready!), have my hair and make-up done, and get dressed.

I was finally ‘removed’ from the garden and banished upstairs at 2.15pm when Nick and the boys arrived – although we’d spent the morning together, we’d decided we wouldn’t see each other after that.

‘The Dress’

I never intended to buy a wedding dress, I have a friend who is a dressmaker and I’d always planned for her to make one.  But I wanted a little of the fun of trying wedding dresses on, so off I went to Cheltenham with my mum and little sister to try some dresses on and see what style and shape suited me best.

We’d been to two generic wedding dress shops before we entered Cocoa Couture owned by Cara Wagstaff.  We were instantly blown away by this tiny upstairs room stuffed full of gorgeous dresses all handmade by Cara and her team from antique fabrics and lace.

Royal wedding predicitions and a new eco-couture bridal collection from the House of Tammam

Charlie

As my wedding date gets nearer and I begin to worry about walking down the aisle with an audience of 70, I remind myself that Kate Middleton will have an estimated audience of 2 billion – then I feel much better.

While I haven’t embraced Royal wedding fever with the same gusto as some, I have been thinking about ‘the’ dress.  Whatever Kate chooses will no doubt set wedding dress trends for years to come.  I hope she incorporates a little bit of vintage and ethical.

Lucy Tammam, owner and designer at the House of Tammam has sent me her Royal wedding predictions.  Over the last few seasons they have seen brides lean more towards hand embellishments and colour detailing, with Kate’s dress likely to have hundreds of man-hours invested to create a truly unique gown.

Tammam also expect to receive more requests for sleeves and extra long trains after the 29th.  For a subtler sleeves, Lucy recommends selecting a sheer fabric like organza (as seen on their “Kate” dress above) or lace and have this mirrored in petticoats and detailing on the dress.

Tammam’s new Bridal Couture collection is now available in select boutiques throughout the UK and online, starting at £950.  The new collection includes the “Josephine” dress which is hand embroidered with banana yarn, and the “Kate” dress which uses block print detailing.

All of Tammam’s garments are fair trade, ethically produced, sustainable and environmentally friendly – most definitely fit for a Royal princess and the rest of us brides-to-be.
