Weekend wedding planning – my dress fitting, makeup trial and a visit to talk flowers

Charlie

Last weekend was full of the joys of planning a wedding – my wedding, to be exact, which is less than 9 weeks away!  On Friday I met with Pati and Vanessa from The Garden & Plant Company, enjoying the sunshine and their little shop filled with the fragrance of hyacinths and the colours of spring.

Here’s an example of one of their spring buttonholes…

I spent the evening with my little sister going through lots of old baby photos in an attempt to select some to be displayed at our wedding.  It was lovely to reminisce and find cute photos like this…yes, that’s me…

Saturday morning my mom, sister and I headed off to Cheltenham for one of my final dress fittings.  You’ll have to stay tuned to find out details of where I’m getting my gorgeous wedding dress from, but it is such a treat to go to there and soak up the atmosphere of this very special place.

My winter woodland hen party

Charlie

I can’t believe that my hen party was nearly two weeks ago now – where does the time go!  It was organised by two friends of mine, with a lovely lunch and afternoon tea, but the main part was a gorgeous woodland walk before having hot chocolate with marshmallows in a bell tent deep in the wood.  It was perfect.

A big thank you to May and Jane for organising it, and to my friends Maria, Sophia, Kate and my mom and sister Izzy for coming to share the afternoon with me.  It was lovely knowing nothing about what was planned, and a really special way to celebrate getting married.

Here’s a sneak peak at the upcoming photos from my hen party last weekend.  I am awaiting the full set of photos from my little sister, who took the pictures.  Can’t wait to share them all!

Making wedding jam

Charlie

I realise that I haven’t spoken much on the blog about my own wedding planning.  I’m quite a private person when it comes to my own wedding and I seem to change my mind about things so often that it’s hard to say ‘this is what we’re doing’.

But last weekend, with autumn approaching, Mr Rigg and I went to a local farm to pick autumn raspberries to make into jam.  One thing we’re almost certain about is that we want to incorporate an afternoon tea into our wedding day.

This is for a number of reasons:

1) A large part of my childhood was spent at my grandparents house in Devon.  Many of my memories are eating homemade scones, with granny’s jam and clotted cream from a family farm up the road.

2) I have a friend who makes the best teeny tiny scones and who is prepared to make enough for our guests.

3) I love the Englishness of it and the connections I have with it.

4) And who doesn’t love scones with clotted cream and jam?

365 days to our wedding?

Charlie

This time next year I might be married!  Saturday 21st May 2011 is one of two dates we are considering for our wedding next year.

My mom left a lovely voice message this morning saying that her and my dad sat sipping a glass of wine and wondering last night if they’d be in the middle of a wedding – our wedding.  How sweet!

But it’s true, in one year time I could be married and that is quite scary still.  Exciting, but scary.  I shall leave you with some beautiful photographs from a beautiful wedding – I am inspired and aspire to a wedding like this…

On the hunt for the perfect wedding dress

Charlie

Image: Maggie Sottero ‘Abigail’

I have been away this weekend staying with my family in the Cotswolds.  My mom, little sister and I went to look at wedding dresses for the first time on Saturday.

It was a strange feeling stepping into the first wedding dress – it felt weird and that somehow I wasn’t old or mature enough to be wearing one.  It has always been my intention to get my dress made by a seamstress friend of mine, but I still wanted a girls day out to try some on and get an idea of what suited me and what styles I liked.

We went to three shops, all quite different – from what I would call that standard ‘off the rail’ wedding dress shop full of strapless gowns that are the current fashion in this country, to one with designer gowns (I tried on some beautiful Jenny Packham’s) and finally to a small boutique shop where all the dresses were bespoke and handmade by the owner.

Dreaming of a May wedding

Charlie

cow parsley wedding

I am and back from a delivering a week long conference and ready to start my year afresh.  The last couple of months have been riddled with illness and long working days.  With the anticipated arrival of spring I want to start my year again, so hopefully I can draw a line under the past months and look forward to a good year and towards my own wedding.

Speaking of which, in the spirit of new beginnings I had to post the lovely picture above as inspiration for my own wedding – just looking at all that frothy cow parsley!  I am planning for a May wedding in 2011 to make the most of the cow parsley filled lanes and hedgerows of my family home in the Cotswolds.  Here’s to dreaming of a beautiful May wedding!

A token of love – my ring

Charlie

myring

Now, although I love all things wedding related, I don’t go in for overly romantic gestures of love.  My poor boyfriend Mr Rigg (fiancé is still too weird a word to be using at this stage!) always has a lot of pressure with what I do and don’t like – you could probably call me fussy, or particular, or plain difficult – but I’d rather be honest and everyone be happy ultimately.

With all this in mind, the lovely man in my life managed to commission a ring especially for me, that was designed and made by the lovely Etsy seller Kate Szabone, in Canada, with a conflict-free diamond, and get it all the way to Italy to ask me to marry him without my knowing.  Impressive, eh?

Exciting news!

Charlie

We are back from our week in Italy having eaten our way around Naples and the Amalfi Coast.

Perhaps most excitingly of all…the lovely man in my life got down on one knee and asked me to marry him!  After five and half years together, the answer was “Of course, yes!”

Our families are so thrilled and it is exciting and daunting all at once.  More to come, including “the ring.”
