Honeymoon heaven staying in a Shepherds Hut set on the riverbank at Otter Camp in Gloucestershire
Charlie

Anywhere called Otter Camp and described as something out of a Swallows & Amazons novel is enough to get me interested, so when I saw this tweet on Canopy & Stars’ Twitter I headed off to investigate.
If you’re not already aware of the Canopy & Stars website – the luxury camping arm of Sawday’s – then pull up a chair with a hot drink and set aside some time to flick through pages of incredible and magical places to stay.
From Gypsy caravans in the Scottish Borders to a Cornish roundhouse, from tipis in Shropshire to a woodland cabin in the Cambrian mountains – Canopy & Stars has a long list of places to stay that are straight from your childhood imagination.
The Shepherd’s Huts at Otter Camp in Gloucestershire are one of those. Reached down a leafy path and across a stream by narrow footbridge, there are two Shepherds Huts – one fitted out with a double bed and woodburning stove, the other with all the trappings of a modern bathroom.
Having camped myself as a child in a Shepherds Hut I can barely think of a more lovely way to spend a night – and for those of us who can’t afford to buy one for our back garden, this is the next best thing.
You can relax in the Fisherman’s Hut, curled up with a novel, or climb down a ladder to paddle in the river or fish for a trout supper. Perhaps places like this can convince us we don’t always need to look overseas to find an idyllic honeymoon destination (but if you do, there are a couple of French places listed on the website).
This delightful spot is just down the road from where we are getting married at my family home, so if anyone’s planning a honeymoon at Otter Camp and wants some tips on lovely places to visit in the area, do get in touch!
Having fallen in love with so many of these places we made the hard decision to pick one in which to spend our own honeymoon at the end of May.
It shall remain a secret as to where we’re staying until after our wedding, but I am already excited at the prospect of sharing the details with you when I return!
Would love to hear from anyone who’s stayed in one of the places listed on the Canopy & Stars website – get in touch via email at charlie@thenaturalweddingcompany.co.uk.
