The Longhouse at Mill on the Brue

Designed to create a feeling of floating above the tree tops with stunning valley views

Who are we...

I’ve lived in Trendle Farm where the Longhouse is located since my parents bought the farm in 1984. My wife Flora and I were married at the Longhouse having built it earlier that year, so it was always our plan to have our wedding reception there.

The Longhouse was designed to create a feeling of floating above the tree tops. The stunning view across the Brue valley stretches over our vineyard, the River Brue and beyond. The southern side widens out to a full length balcony overlooking the lawn, formal flower beds and gazebo. It is a popular area for wedding guests in the evening to enjoy catching up with friends, soak in the views or just take a break from dancing!

The interior of the Longhouse has purposely been decorated in muted tones to allow wedding couples to enjoy creating their own colour schemes. There are different table layouts depending on the number of guests, and how formal you want the wedding breakfast to be. The tables are long and rectangular rather than round, making it easier for guests to be able to talk to each other. The Longhouse bar is adjacent and close enough not to split up the wedding party, and importantly on the same level. There is a disabled lavatory and baby changing facilities also on the same level.

For the summer using the full outside space is a must, perhaps having a civil ceremony in the oak gazebo followed by drinks on the lawn whilst having photos taken in front of the beautiful flower beds.

For the variable times in spring and autumn, we can make the most of sunny weather by offering a flexible approach on the day, as to where the ceremony may be held or the location of the after ceremony drinks. The conveniently located Wine Cellar can be used to serve coffee after the speeches if the evenings are chilly.

Under floor heating and a roaring log fire in the Longhouse creates a friendly warm atmosphere for a winter wedding. For the civil wedding ceremonies we would suggest that either the Longhouse or the Wine Cellar are used.

We built the Longhouse to high environmental standards and are proud holders of the Gold Green Tourism Business Scheme Award which is the highest category. The building credentials include rain water harvesting, sheep wool insulation, recycled rubber roof tiles, heating by either ground source heat pump or our large wood burner stove, solar thermal and photovoltaic panels which produce more than 70% of our annual electricity requirement.
