Beautiful hellebore wedding flower ideas for winter brides // The Natural Wedding Company

Today’s beautiful collection of hellebore wedding flower ideas sees the return of our ‘An ode to...’ series that we so enjoyed doing a couple of years back. A series highlighting what we feel are the unsung heroes of the British floral world. Beautiful blooms that may sometimes get over looked but can make a stunning contribution to your wedding flowers.

Winter brides may feel like they are missing out on the wide selection of flowers that are available throughout the warmer months. However with our hellebore wedding flower ideas we’re going to show there are plenty of beautiful winter blooms.

In bloom through winter into early spring, hellebores are available in a plethora of shades and hues. Making them the perfect flower to fit with most colour themes.

Hellebore wedding bouquets

Hellebores look equally beautiful in a loose-tied bouquet or more structures offering brides great flexibility. They can add the perfect pop of colour amongst winter greenery. Or go for more subtle tones of off white which we are incredibly popular at the moment.

Hellebore buttonholes

Due to the variation in tones hellebores look brilliant pretty much paired with anything.  I particularly love the buttonhole combination with pine cones another subtle nod to the season. They also look great alongside other winter favourites like heather, ferns, and herbs.

Hellebore flower crowns

The delicate shape and vintage feel of hellebores lends them perfectly for dreamy flower crowns. Brides looking for an ethereal or boho vibe hellebores are the flowers for you.

Hellebore wedding table decoration

There is a reason hellebores are also known as the ‘Christmas rose’, they make the most beautiful winter arrangements. Go for vases bursting with them for a classic look.  Try the potted variety combined with moss and twigs for a woodland feel. I also love the addition of other winter favourites such as the delicate cyclamen and pansies, and branches of magnolia.

Alternative hellebore wedding decor

The great thing about hellebores being in bloom during the winter is they offer couples the opportunity to create beautiful seasonal floral statements that they may not think would be possible.

Adorn a wooden wreath for wall hangings or fill vintage bottles and dot them around your venue. The statement wall hanging would make a great backdrop for a photo opportunity.

Hellebore wedding cake

Sadly we could only find one wedding cake decorated with real hellebores. How pretty is it as well?! Winter brides are missing a trick. Hellebores are the perfect replacement for any summer flowers that you see decorating wedding cakes in their droves.

As beautiful as they are Hellebores are poisonous and should not be used on cakes or in contact with any food. I suspect that is why you have not been able to find images of them on cakes. They are also a skin irritant so should be handled with care.

Many thanks for letting us know this, I will investigate more and update the blog post to reflect this – we don’t want to be encouraging the use of any flowers on cakes that are not suitable xXx

Hi Charlie, the only reason I know this is I was about to use them on my mums cake as my garden is full of them at the moment (I’m from Australia). My sister in law who is a professional cake decorator advised me to always check before I put any fresh flowers on a cake. I was very disappointed to discover they were poisonous so had to re-think my decoration and had to go with the standard roses.
