Blog

I’m quite excited today because I have someone else to share ideas with you – my lovely friend Caroline, also recently married, who is responsible for coining the phrase ‘new wives club’ and starting me down this blogging path. Fingers-crossed, Caroline’s lovely wedding will be shared in detail on the blog in the coming months, but for now she’s going to share a creative solution that she’s done at home recently…
I would say that for most of the wedding planning I was dreaming about what the flowers would look like and how I could make them look as pretty as they do in all the beautiful real weddings you find on the internet. We rummaged around every antique shop and market we would come across looking for interesting containers. One of the things I really thought would be nice would be to display some flowers on an old wooden step ladder.

A step ladder doesn’t need to just display flowers. It could be a table plan with plants hosting names on labels or perhaps favours could be displayed here.

In the end we couldn’t find a good enough ladder in time and thinking back I may have just stopped looking and got distracted with other things like re-organising the table plan or attending dress fittings.
In a recent trip to Hungerford we went to the amazing farmshop there and noticed a florist was now a resident. The displays of flowers were mostly on wooden step ladders and I remembered how I had once dreamed of them at the wedding and then thought why should I stop looking?

We had a wander around the antique shops when we were back in Hungerford and as if by fate we saw this gem. It isn’t as short and wide as I hoped but great all the same.

After some sanding I’ve brought it back inside and put some pots of bulbs on. I would like to sand it a bit more and paint it but for now it sits happy in the corner of our living room. I’m thinking of mixing it up with some candles or putting photos on, the possibilities are endless hey!

A huge thank you to Caroline for taking the time to share some inspiration for both weddings and home life. I too love the idea of using an old step ladder (here’s some ideas I’ve posted), one that is worn and looks like its been through a lot, to display stuff at home or at your wedding. We found a lovely shortish step ladder at a junk shop…but it has ended up being used practically (for decorating) rather than to look beautiful. Maybe one day it will make its way into a cosy corner of my living room.
Caroline writes a personal blog called Wandering Starrs which you should definitely check out, and if anyone else would like to get involved and share an idea or project as part of my New Wives Club posts, do drop me an email at charlie@thenaturalweddingcompany.co.uk.
